On the way home yesterday, I had a run-in with captain douche of the civilian highway patrol. Right here, the highway merges from 3 lanes to 2. Also at this point a flashing sign says you can drive int he breakdown lane. I got in the brake down lane (legally) and proceeded on my way, until some jerk in an Explorer decided I shall not pass and splits the lane.

I suppose there is a chance the guy was texting and drifted to the right but i’m pretty sure he just wanted to control what I was doing. I beeped....nothing. I beeped again, louder. He hands go up like WTF and he moves over. This has happened twice int he past week. Earlier in the day I saw a guy trying to turn right on red light, beep at the woman in the crosswalk.

Is the breakdown lane the shoulder? I’ve never heard it called that before.

The best is in cities when there is parking in the furthest right lane overnight and it’s a 45 mph street. Zipping along at 45-50 mph at about 3 pm and OH SHIT THAT’S PARKED THERE STILL

Huh, I’ve never seen one in the US. I’ve always liked the implementation in Germany, where there are lighted signs showing when the shoulder lane is open for traffic. Of course, that’s typically the width of a full lane, just separated by a solid line.

they alternate sides in morning and afternoon to work with the high volume with each ‘rushhour’ which is really like 3 hours long

Damn, that’s a narrow ass breakdown lane if they’re using it for travel.

To your point though, people are oblivious on the roads, or they think that they own them. Granted, there are times where I will move over in a lane in my commute, and that’s because I've waited patiently to get off on an exit, and you inevitably have some douche who tries to fly up to the exit and get over. I will purposely hug the outer part of the lane so they can't squeeze in. Wait your turn like everyone else.

Because out of 37 states I have driven in, Massachusetts is the only place crazy enough to do this....

It’s not even a matter of whether or not he has any right to enforce the law.

It’s that the Explorer driver seems to have no clue what the law even is.

You were passing on the right? Isn’t that a thing the internet gets mad about too?

if the speed limit is 60 and traffic in the lane to my left is going 50, there is no reason I can’t pass

Interesting. You mean that the two roads in your aerial view alternate by time of day?

Chicago has reversing express lanes, which work out alright. Certainly better than the garbage they put on I-95 in Miami, where they cut out existing lanes and charge tolls (up to $10.50) on the “express” lanes. So now traffic is even worse in the non-toll lanes, and you get gouged to use the lanes that used to just be normal traffic flow. Really great.

Not sure about the law in your state. California code and good manners dictate you do not pass on the right.

I used to do it too. I used to be a very impatient driver, staring at my speedometer and getting mad when the number wasn’t “right”. Everyone was “in my way”. Calming down around town and on the highway was the best thing I ever did for myself. Driving has become a pleasure. I still have fun in the mountains and the twistys, but around town I’m chillin. It’s a lot nicer, I promise.

no, the breakdown lane is active in morning for northbound and active in the afternoon for southbound.

further north they take a lane from the opposing side with movable jersey barriers to create a carpool/express lane

its a bit narrow but its probably a full lane, ithink the perspective makes it look narrower than it is

By my house the one lane ramp (that leads to the left lane of the highway) to the highway explicitly says “Speed Limit 50 MPH” but people regularly do 35 instead for some reason so I have to pass on the right and then I quickly move to the left. I’m not doing 35 in a 50 I don’t care if I pass on the left, right or right through them!

from your link:

21754. The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions: (a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn. (b) Upon a highway within a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in the direction of travel. (c) Upon any highway outside of a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width and clearly marked for two or more lines of moving traffic in the direction of travel. (d) Upon a one-way street. (e) Upon a highway divided into two roadways where traffic is restricted to one direction upon each of such roadways. The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a slow moving vehicle from the duty to drive as closely as practicable to the right hand edge of the roadway.

Obviously it’s wrong to block the lane, but that is incredibly dumb traffic management...

yea but it beats building an entirely new lane
